How it is built
The Herlewing consists of a middle mattress on a base. The middle mattress holds 15-centimetre pocket springs, each individually encased, with corners and edges reinforced with flax. The base holds two further spring systems: a layer of 8-centimetre Bonnell springs and one of 13 centimetres. Together that makes 1,708 steel springs.
Around them lie horsehair, cotton, wool and flax, without latex and without chemicals. Without legs the bed stands 51 centimetres tall and, according to Hästens, weighs almost 160 kilos at 180 by 210 centimetres.
How it compares to the 2000T
The Herlewing is younger than the 2000T and follows the same principle of three spring systems. The difference lies in the execution: the 2000T has two layers of pocket springs stacked in its middle mattress, the Herlewing one. That makes the 2000T taller and heavier, with more springs.
More is not automatically better here, and Hästens says as much itself: the brand writes that it cannot say which of the two is better. Some bodies prefer a soft Herlewing to a soft 2000T. That is precisely the kind of difference you can only establish on yourself.
The name is Afrikaans for ‘awakening’. Until 2018 the model was called Proferia; that year Hästens gave several beds a name meaning ‘waking up’ in another language.
How to get an honest verdict on it
Not in ten minutes on a shop floor. The difference between two beds built on the same principle lies in how you lie after a few hours and how you wake up.
At SleepSpa the Herlewing isn't in a suite. The 2000T is, though: the bed the Herlewing is weighed against in almost every conversation. Anyone who has slept a night on it has a reference point that suddenly makes a showroom visit to the Herlewing mean something.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Herlewing and the 2000T?
Both have three spring systems. The 2000T has two layers of pocket springs stacked in its middle mattress, the Herlewing one; that makes the 2000T taller (55 against 51 cm), heavier and gives it more springs (2,258 against 1,708). According to Hästens neither is better: it depends on your body.
Does the Herlewing also come in a round version?
Yes. Hästens makes a round version of the Herlewing, alongside a round Superia. Ask the dealer for sizes and price for each version.
What does a Hästens Herlewing cost?
Prices depend on size, base, legs and fabric and are quoted per configuration. Ask for it in the same configuration as the model you are comparing it with, or you are comparing two different things.
